Company News >> In the second half of the battle of semiconductor display, the OLED ecology of China's major manufacturers is emerging
In October 2018, Huawei released the Mate 20 series, becoming the first Chinese manufacturer to use domestic screens on flagship phones. From the perspective of hindsight, we can speculate that this is Huawei's intention to support the domestic industrial chain, but this move by Huawei was not understood by the industry at the time.

Surprisingly, the subsequent "quality control problems" of the Mate 20 series made BOE a beneficiary.

Like the iPhone 12, the first batch of Mate 20 series also had a "green screen", but according to market statistics, these models are almost all from LGD screens, which also established a reputation for the quality of domestic OLED screens.

Subsequently, Xiaomi and TCL Huaxing, ZTE and Visionox, OPPO and BOE respectively reached cooperation agreements, and domestic OLED screens began to move from behind the scenes to the front.

In this process, domestic mobile phone manufacturers and panel manufacturers have reached a high degree of cooperation and started joint research and development on new technologies.

For example, the previously popular under-screen camera technology, almost all commercial under-screen camera types are the result of cooperation between panel manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers, which objectively resolves a contradiction, that is, it is becoming more and more difficult for suppliers to implement mobile phones. Manufacturers' requirements, those suppliers who really master the core technology will not meet the small batch shipment needs of downstream manufacturers.

The cooperation between domestic panel manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers has solved this problem very well.

However, from the perspective of opening up the market, the innovation of a single module technology such as under-screen camera is not enough to convince consumers to pay for domestic OLED panels, but a folding screen may be a good choice.

Up to now, the folding screen models released by Huawei and Honor are equipped with screens provided by BOE. Judging from the market response, BOE has become the preferred choice of mobile phone manufacturers in the field of folding screens. Although the folding screen mobile phone released by OPPO has also gained a good reputation, the cost of adopting the Samsung public version screen solution is also very obvious: mobile phone manufacturers cannot achieve in-depth customization, and the model development cycle has also been lengthened. Of course, folding screens are not the only outlet for domestic panel manufacturers in the OLED industry, because the threshold in this field is indeed high. For example, Xiaomi’s previously released folding screen Mix Fold was criticized by consumers for its serious creases and large screen borders, and its screen supplier TCL Huaxing also became the target of public criticism.

But aside from risk factors, the cooperation model of "industrial alliance" has indeed proposed a new direction for the smartphone industry, and even expanded the relevant domestic industrial chain. For example, the previously unknown Triumph Technology, Huawei sent a technical team two years ago to jointly develop the mass production process of UTG glass, which also helped BOE solve the problem of fragile folding screens, forming a win-win cooperation among the three parties situation.

What is certain is that the future OLED industry will still be a sunrise industry. Omdia predicts that from 2021 to 2026, the OLED market will grow from US$38.06 billion to US$47.05 billion, with a compound annual growth rate of 12%. The development of emerging markets will inevitably be dominated by new technologies and new trends. In this process, the development model of "industrial alliance" may be the best path left for domestic OLED manufacturers.
